U.S. to supply Israel 1000 bunker buster bombs

Jerusalem, Sept 14 (PTI) The U.S. would supply Israel with 1,000 bunker buster bombs despite concerns in Washington regarding a possible preparation by the Jewish state to target Iran's nuclear facilities.

The Pentagon has announcedÿthatÿUnited Statesÿwill provide Israel with 1,000 units of Guided Bomb Unit-39 (G.B.U.-39), a special weapon developed for penetrating fortified facilities located deep underground, daily Ha'aretz reported.

Each of the bombs weigh 113 k.g., but its penetration capability equals that of a one tonne bomb.

The G.B.U.-39 would significantly boost Israel's
firepower as a single aircraft can carry four of them at a
time instead of a single one-tonne bomb as it used to earlier
in the past, the report said.

During demonstrations, the G.B.U.-39,ÿlabelled by
manufacturer Boeing as a Small Diameter Bomb (S.D.B.), has
successfully penetrated more than 1.8 metres of thick
reinforced concrete with a 23-k.g. warhead.

The G.P.S.-guided weapon is said to have a 50 percent
probability of hitting its intended target within five-eight
meters, minimising collateral damage.

The estimated value for the bomb's G.P.S. version, which
military experts have called the latest development in the
bunker-buster line, is around U.S.D. 70,000 to 90,000 for
eachÿbomb, the report said.

The Pentagon also announced that it willÿhelp upgrade
the Israel Defence Forces' Patriot anti-aircraft missiles,
which are a part of its missile-interception array.

Israel will also receive 28,000 L.A.W. (Light Anti-Tank
Weapon) tube launchers for its land forces from its closest
ally.

The Jewish stateÿhad earlier received bunker busters from
the U.S. and those were usedÿduring the Second Lebanon war.

Ha'aretz earlier this week reported that a request for
more such bombs were denied fearingÿa possible Israeli attack
on Iran's nuclear facilities. PTI
