Thai border tourism booms on the long holiday

Thailand’s border tourism and trade were boosted during the four-day long Buddhist Lent holiday, particularly in the country’s northernmost province of Chiang Rai where a large crowd of people was seen Sunday crossing the border to Tachilek Province of Myanmar.

Mae Sai District, a gateway to consumer goods and fruits from China, was packed with thousands of tourists Sunday. A long queue of tourists and gamblers was seen at the Mae Sai border checkpoint Sunday morning waiting to cross the border to visit the casinos in Tachilek Province.

Sai Lomjoy and Doi Wao markets as well as shops on both sides of Phahon Yothin Highway near the border were also filled up with shopping tourists. Local products were sold like hot cakes and traffic congestion was reported on the highway near the border checkpoint.

The total spending in Mae Sai District and Tachilek Province was expected to exceed 10 million baht over the four-day long holiday.

Meanwhile, soldiers, customs officials and immigration police were busy searching the vehicles and incoming tourists’ luggage for drugs and illegal items. (TNA)
