Sixteen Cambodian illegal immigrants arrested in Thailand

BANGKOK, July 17 (TNA) - Thai police has arrested 16 Cambodian illegal migrant workers for illegal entry to Thailand.

Local Thai authorities in Nakhon Ratchasima province Sunday arrested 16 Cambodian workers including 14 men and two women on a bus from Surin Province to Nakhon Ratchasima Province.

The workers came from Cambodia’s Province of Banteay Meanchey and illegally sneaked into Thailand through Surin province.

Information was received which stated that the Cambodian workers were on their way to a steel factory in Chon Buri province, 80 kilometers southeast of Bangkok.

Authorities said the workers confessed that they had paid 3,000 baht to Thai traffickers to secure them an access to jobs. They said the workers were initially charged with illegal immigration and would later be deported out of the country.

Thai authorities have actively screened out new illegal immigrants during the country’s registration period for illegal migrant workers and after the Puea Thai Party’s announced to implement its 300-baht minimum wage policy, which was expected to lure workers from neighboring countries, particularly Cambodia.
