Renault Samsung to launch new SM7 sedan in August

SEOUL, July 17 (Yonhap) -- Renault Samsung Motor Co., the South Korean unit of French automaker Renault SA, said Sunday that it will launch a completely new model of its flagship SM7 sedan in August.
The carmaker said the all-new luxury car will represent a "full model change" from the current SM7 vehicle launched seven years ago.
The company has injected 400 billion won (US$377.5 million) into building the new full-size sedan, with development taking 32 months.
"The vehicle will inherit the high standard of quality and value of Renault Samsung, and coupled with the technological excellence of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, is expected to exceed the needs of consumers," the carmaker said in a press release.
It said the new car's exterior draws from restrained European refinement and offers unparalleled safety, comfort, a roomy interior and noise suppression.
The Busan-based carmaker said that compared to the current model, the new SM7 has 70 millimeters of extra legroom for backseat passengers and plenty of headroom, and features so-called aviation-type headrests. The SM7 is also the first full-size vehicle in the country to offer "sports driving mode."
The new SM7 will be powered by the third-generation VQ engine connected to a six-speed transmission system. Consumers can choose between a 3.5-liter or 2.5-liter engine
The smaller VQ25 engine can generate a maximum 190 horsepower at 4,400 rpm and 24.8 kilogram-meters of torque, while the vehicle's Energy Smart Management permits 11 kilometers per liter of fuel.
The larger VQ35 can produce 258 horsepower at 4,400 rpm and 33.7 kilogram-meters of torque, which is the highest reached for any car of this class in the country. The VQ35 model has been checked to have energy efficiency reaching 9.6 kilometers per liter of fuel.
The local price of the new SM7 will be set at between 30 million won through 39 million won depending on engine capacity, trim and other options that are expected to be competitive in the local market.
This is slightly higher than the price tag of the current SM7 model, with its base price of 28.8 million won going up to 37.7 million won.
