Merit-making flourishes on Buddhist Lent

BANGKOK, July 16 (TNA) - Buddhist devotees continue Saturday to make merits and pray for blessings on the day of the Buddhist Lent.

In Chiang Rai, a scene of Buddhist alms-giving filled up local temples, especially at Wat Phrathat Doi Tung temple. Thai communities in Mae Sai district were also joined by Myanmar and Lao people who ventured to cross the border for the tradition of offering Buddhist Lent candles to monks.

In Ubon Ratchathani, a ceremony was held to launch an enormous Buddhist Lent candle procession amid crowds of Thai and foreign tourists. Celebrations here have been renowned for its grandeur and refined aspects of traditional wisdom.

The Buddhist Lent marks the start of a three lunar month period in the rainy season when monks remain in a temple. In former times, this was done to prevent monks from trampling upon rice paddies when they move to receive alms.

Meanwhile, picking up the vibe from the Asalaha Pucha Day on Friday night were candle processions lit up nationwide. A remarkable night was observed in Phayao province, where the world’s only waterway candle procession was led by 50 rowboats in Kwan Phayao lake. (TNA)
