Myanmar lifts ban on Thai products

BANGKOK, July 15 (TNA) - Myanmar’s Ministry of Commerce has officially lifted its ban on 15 categories of Thai imports after almost a decade of enforcement.

Srirat Ratthapana, director-general of Thailand’s Department of Trade Negotiations, reported the update on Friday, saying that the ban was revoked on June 11 following lobbying efforts from the Thai side in October and December last year. She said however, imports of the commodities still required permission from Myanmar authorities.

Previously banned products included seasoning powder, syrup, beverages, biscuits, chewing gums, cake, wafers, canned foods, instant noodles, liquors, beer, cigarettes, plastic products, fresh fruits, including other products controlled by the law.

In 2010, Thailand exported some 15 categories of products to Myanmar worth over 7.7 billion baht. (TNA)
