Thailand pushes for progress on Doha round

BANGKOK, July 14 (TNA) - Thailand held a video conference of parties concerned in both the public and private sectors in Bangkok on Thursday to discuss measures to push for progress of the Doha round of multilateral trade talks under the World Trade Organisation (WTO), which has been stalled for more than 10 years.

Srirat Ratthapana, Director General of the Thai Ministry of Commerce's Department of Trade Negotiations, told reporters after the tele-conference of over 50 relevant parties, including Thai Ambassador to the Geneva-based WTO, that proposed measures beneficial to the WTO's less developed member countries were discussed, including a waiver on import tariffs, quota and subsidy of cotton and other commodities.

Srirat said that the proposals would be raised before the 8th WTO trade ministerial meeting, set to be held in Geneva from December 16-17 and would probably be approved in an agreement, called the December Package.

Srirat revealed that other issues raised at today's meeting included trade facilities, a waiver of export subsidy, a limit on fishery subsidy--proposed by other developing countries; while the remaining issues on the opening up of farm, industrial and service markets were expected to be included in a "work program" over the next couple of years.

The senior Thai official insisted that the Doha round needs to be concluded, at least to some extent by the end of this year, to ease or stop a growing pressure on trade protectionist measures imposed by rival global markets, suggesting that pending trade disputes among WTO member economies also need to be settled.
