Thai businesses urged to prepare for AEC

BANGKOK, July 14 (TNA) - Thai businesses should ready themselves for the formation of an ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 when market expansions and fiercer competition are expected, says a Thai trade official.

Chatchai Luamprasert, a specialist from the Commerce Ministry’s Department of Trade Negotiations, made the remarks on Thursday, although citing benefits of the AEC, including tariff reduction to elimination and other trade facilitation measures.

Chatchai revealed that Southeast Asia was now Thailand’s top export market, with exports to the region expected to reach nearly USD50 billion this year.

In 2010, the value of Thai exports to Southeast Asia exceeded USD44 billion, accounting for 22.6 per cent of the country’s total export value. Imports from Southeast Asian countries into Thailand in contrast were estimated at USD30 billion.

Meanwhile, Somkiat Anurat, vice chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, explained that Thai businesses could better cope with liberal trade and investments in the future by actively exploring opportunities within the ASEAN region. (TNA)
