Thailand exports 5.5 million cars in 13 years

BANGKOK, July 13 (TNA) - Thailand has exported up to 5.5 million automobiles over the past 13 years, mostly to regional markets, including other Southeast Asian countries, Japan, Australia and the Middle East.
Wanlop Tiasiri, Director of Thailand Automotive Institute, acknowledged that automobiles made in Thailand have been now internationally recognized and their popularity has been growing.
Wanlop said that Thailand began focusing on car exports after the 1997 economic crisis with export volumes having been growing ever since, and that as of May 2011, or in a 13-year, five-month-period, Thailand had exported 5.5 million automobiles worth over 2.5 trillion baht, but the export value had increased to as much as 5 trillion baht when parts for overseas maintenance and assembly were included.
Last year alone, Thailand exported almost 900,000 units of automobiles, the highest record. Wanlop assessed, however, that the country's automobile exports should drop slightly this year as Japan's massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11 has limited auto parts from Japan. Consequently, Thai auto exports fell by 4 per cent in the first five months of this year--although the country's automobile market grew by 24 per cent year-on-year during the same period.
Thailand Automotive Institute said that it expects Thai automobile exports this year will be comparable to those of last year, or about 900,000 units, short of an earlier target of one million units, due mainly to impacts from the March 11 Japanese twin disasters. (TNA)
