EC expected to endorse more elected MPs next week

BANGKOK, July 13 (TNA) - The Election Commission of Thailand (EC) is expected to officially endorse more elected MPs next week, as it is scheduled to hold a new meeting on July 19 to consider the issue.

An election commissioner, Sodsri Sattayatham, said Wednesday that more of elected candidates in Thailand's general election on July 3, should be endorsed at the EC next meeting, and that she believed the EC would be able to endorse at least 475 elected MPs before August 3; so, the Thai Parliament could convene its next session within 30 days after the national poll as required by the country's 2007 Constitution.

In case that the EC could not complete investigating all electoral complaints by then, Sodsri acknowledged that the Thai election agency would officially endorse part or all of the elected candidates and would announce results of its investigations against them later.

The EC announced its official endorsement of 358 out of Thailand's total 500 elected MPs, in both the constituency and party-list systems, on Tuesday night after a marathon meeting of nearly 12 hours. But designated first female Thai prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra from the Pheu Thai Party and outgoing caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and several other elected candidates from many political parties have not yet been on the EC's verified list due to electoral complaints against them.
