Head of U.N.`s commission on development in Asia-Pacific region to visit S. Korea

SEOUL, Sept. 14 (Yonhap) -- The head of the U.N.'s commission on development and cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region is to visit South Korea next week, Seoul said Sunday.

Noeleen Heyzer, executive secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), will arrive in South Korea next Wednesday for a three-day visit, according to officials at the South Korean Foreign Ministry.

Established in 1947 with its headquarters in Bangkok, ESCAP is the regional development arm of the United Nations, with 62 member countries.

At the end of August 2007, Heyzer, who is from Singapore, was appointed by U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to the post at the level of Under-Secretary-General. She is the first woman to occupy the position.

During her visit, Heyzer is to mainly discuss transnational efforts to enhance low-carbon, environmentally friendly growth.

South Korean president Lee Myung-bak last month pledged to make the utmost use of green technology and clean energy to develop sustainable growth engines.
