Change of government not affect THAI

BANGKOK, July 12 (TNA) - A change in the Thai government in the coming weeks, from the outgoing Democrat Party-led to the Puea Thai Party-led administration, is unlikely to affect Thai Airways International (THAI), the national flag carrier.
THAI President Piyasvasti Amranand explained that THAI is a state enterprise listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) with legal obligations to follow relevant rules and regulations imposed by authorities concerned systematically, through its executive board, the national airline will, therefore, be unaffected by any change in the administration.
Piyasvasti said that any incumbent government is also abided by Thai securities legislation under which any move or measure involving a listed firm needs to be approved by the firm's shareholders, acknowledging that 49 per cent of THAI stakes are owned by other investors, including foreigners, although the Thai government holds the majority 51 per cent stakes in the company.
Meanwhile, the THAI board has approved a plan to discharge 50 passenger planes over the next six years, from 2011-2017, in line with another plan under which the national airline will acquire a new fleet of aircraft to replace the ageing fleet.
The THAI board has also been informed of a plan to acquire two new Boeing 777-300 ER passenger planes on July 26, a couple of months before their earlier schedule in October 2011, to be used on the national airline's Bangkok-Madrid flights triple a week, starting from August 1.
Besides, the THAI board has been reported on the company's air transport volumes in June 2011 when overall passengers on THAI flights rose 7.4 per cent year-on-year, but a 0.8 per cent drop from May, but the proportion of occupied seats on each THAI flight stood at 65.8 per cent last month, a 0.8 per cent year-on-year increase and 6.3 per cent hike from a month earlier.
