Thai Cabinet extends emergency decree in deep South

BANGKOK, July 12 (TNA) - The Cabinet of Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva approved at its last meeting Tuesday the extension of the emergency decree having enforced in Thailand's troubled deep South.
Abhisit told reporters after his last Cabinet meeting, the 133rd of its kind, that the emergency decree imposed in the far South has, however, been extended by 60 days this time, instead of 90 days, and has not covered Mae Lan District in Pattani Province.
Thailand's Emergency Decree on Public Administration in Emergency Situation, BE 2548 (2005) requires the Thai government to extend the state of emergency every 90 days.
Abhisit explained that the 60-day extension of the emergency decree in the country's insurgency-plagued southernmost region, covering Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani, was approved because his Democrat Party-led government would be in charge by then, allowing the new Puea Thai Party-led administration to make its decision on the issue.
