Thailand sends naval force to join int'l operations against Somali piracy

BANGKOK, July 12 (TNA) - The Royal Thai Navy has sent its second team of naval officers and warships to join international operations against Somali piracy in the Gulf of Aden.
Thai Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Kamthorn Phumhiran chaired a ceremony in Bangkok Tuesday to send off the second squad of 368 Thai naval officers for the 140-day mission in the Gulf of Aden and along the Somali coast.
The Thai naval force then departed aboard His Thai Majesty's Ship or HTMS Similan and Narathiwat and is scheduled to return to Thailand this November.
Meanwhile, Thailand's first anti-piracy fleet successfully conducted its mission last year, as it could protect cargo ships and rescue 23 Thai fishing crewmembers who were hijacked and set afloat in the sea off the Somali coast. The Thai victims have returned to Thailand safely and the Royal Thai Navy has been internationally recognized. (TNA)
