MCOT joins government to promote Thai clothes

BANGKOK, July 12 (TNA) - MCOT Public Company Limited (MCOT) has signed an agreement with the Thai government, through the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, on a joint campaign on promoting Thai clothes.
The memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed in Bangkok on July 11 by Permanent Secretary for Culture Somchai Saenglai, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Cooperatives Supatra Tanaseneewat and MCOT President Tanawat Wansom in a bid to jointly create public awareness on conserving traditional value, wisdom and research on Thai textiles and costumes.
According to the Permanent Secretary for Culture, the project has been proposed to the Thai Cabinet in order to encourage government and state officials to mostly wear cloths made from Thai natural textiles; while his ministry, in cooperation with leading Thai designers across the country, will publish bilingual books, in both Thai and English languages, featuring information on Thai textile businesses in 77 provinces nationwide and pictures of Thai outfits designed for government and state officials in different occasions.
In addition, prime-time television programs, particularly those after daily evening news reports, will be encouraged to widely promote costumes made from natural Thai textiles, which are environmentally-friendly.
Meanwhile, the deputy permanent secretary for agriculture and cooperatives acknowledged that the initiative will not only promote the Thai textile industry, but also support Thai designers' businesses and local growers of the mulberry tree and producers of Thai silk and other Thai clothes, saying that his ministry's officials are also encouraged to wear Thai outfits on Wednesdays.
The MCOT President, on the other hand, promised to promote Thai textiles through all MCOT media channels, including Modernine TV, Modern Radio Networks and MCOT news websites, insisting that MCOT news anchors and staff are also encouraged to wear cloths made from Thai textiles on Fridays in order to set out a good example for other agencies and offices.
