B.J.P. says N deal a "mega fraud", assurances to Par not kept

Santosh K. Joy and Sunil Gatade
Bangalore, Sep 13 (PTI) Stepping up its attack on the government on the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal, B.J.P. on Saturday charged the Congress-led U.P.A. with perpetrating a "mega fraud" on both Parliament and people of the country on the issue.

The party, however, insisted that its opposition to the deal was "fundamentally different" from that of the Left as it was for "good, friendly relations with the U.S. including strategic partnership.

"The B.J.P. is for strategic partnership with the U.S.
but not for strategic subservience which is what the deal is
about," the political resolution adopted by the party here on
the second day of the National Executive meet said.

"The text of the nuclear agreement and the statements
of the Bush administration establish that the U.P.A.
government has perpetrated a mega fraud on both Parliament and
the people of the country," it said, adding "none of the
assurances that were given to Parliament have been kept."

The party alleged that all assurances about "assured
fuel supply, transfer of technology are patently misleading"
and underscored that any compromise on "India's right to
nuclear test is wholly unacceptable".

The waiver granted by the Nuclear Suppliers Group
(N.S.G.) "only worsens India's strategic interests" and the
party's stand that the deal in the present form seriously
compromises India's strategic sovereignty and the right of
nuclear test has been "completely vindicated after the recent
revelations", party general secretary H.N. Ananth Kumar told
reporters.

The saffron party said the deal in its present form
is also prone to have serious commercial and security
implications.

"Any future test done in national interest would
seriously impact nuclear commerce with N.S.G. members. This
has serious security implications as the country has lost
power to develop credible minimum nuclear deterrence," Kumar
said.

"The B.J.P. would like to clarify that our opposition
to the deal is fundamentally different that of the Left
parties. We are for good, friendly relations with the U.S.A.
including strategic partnership," the resolution said.
It warned that the deal could lead to future discord
between the U.S. and India.

The opposition party accused the Congress of "patently
false representation" of the deal before people and claimed
that the country would soon understand the "falsity".

"The consistent campaign of the Congress party and
the U.P.A. government that the deal would lead to energy
security and availability of power is equally misleading.
"This would go down as a clear cut case of patently
false representation. The nation and people of the country
would very soon realise the falsity of the claim," Kumar said.
B.J.P. alleged that while the power situation in the
country was grim, the U.P.A. government instead of taking
immediate meaningful measures is declaring "wait for 25 years
for nuclear power."

Speaking in the same vein, party chief Rajnath Singh
said at the meeting hat the "revelations" have also proved
that "concealing of facts" was not done by the U.S. government
but by the Indian Government.
The party's reaction came in the wake of U.S.
President George W. Bush's communication to the Congress
saying that a provision in the 123 Agreement records certain
political commitments concerning reliable supply of nuclear
fuel given to India which were not legally binding.
Rajnath wondered whether by agreeing to terms of the
N.S.G., the country had wilfully converted its unilateral
moratorium on nuclear testing into multilateral international
commitment. PTI JOY
