Low-wage migrant workers have not yet flocked into Thailand

BANGKOK, July 11 (TNA) – Thai Labour Ministry insisted that there had been no report of a significant inflow of low-wage migrant workers into the country since the Pheu Thai Party’s announcement to raise the minimum wage.

Anurak Tosarat, Director for the Office of Foreign Workers Administration, admitted that the announced policy to raise the minimum wage to 300 baht per day might be a pulling factor for migrant workers from Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia.

He said once the new wage policy was put into practice, migrant workers imported under government-to-government Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs), would also enjoy the same minimum wage as that of Thai workers.

Since these MOUs became effective, Thailand has imported a total of 50,000 foreign workers, some 12,000 of whom came to Kingdom during October 2009 - September 2010 while the rest entered the country during October 2010 - June 2011.

Anurak said Thai authorities had been instructed to strictly guarding the border during the new round of the registration for illegal migrant workers, which is set to end on July 14, and that it would be difficult for illegal migrant workers to try to sneak into country. (TNA)
