Abhisit likely to be re-elected as Democrat party leader

BANGKOK, July 10 (TNA) - Thailand’s outgoing Prime Minister and former Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva is likely to be reelected as the party leader, Democrat Party’s acting secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban said on Sunday.

Speaking with reporters at Don Mueang airport before leaving for his Surat Thani province, Suthep denied the report that southern Democrat MPs did not want Abhisit and former members of the party’s executive board to return.

He said that all Democrat members considered Abhisit as being the best qualified figure to lead their party.

Abhisit announced his resignation as leader of the Democrat party on July 4 following the defeat inflicted by the rival Pheu Thai Party in last Sunday election.

It was reported that pressures mounted for the previous executive board of the Democrat Party not to return to its leadership to take responsibility for the loss in the July 3 election.

The show of responsibility was earlier demonstrated by former Democrat leader Banyat Bantadtan who resigned after a general election loss and did not return to the post. (TNA)
