Protests in Malaysia do not affect tourism in southern Thailand
BANGKOK, July 10 (TNA) - Political protests in Malaysia do not affect tourism in southern border provinces of Thailand as many Malaysian tourists have still crossed the border to visit tourist destinations in the region.
Several Malaysian tourists crossed the border through Padang Besar and Sadao border checkpoints Sunday morning to visit tourist destinations in the southern Thai provinces of Songkhla, Satun, Phatthalung and Trang.
An association of hoteliers in Songkhla Province’s Hat Yai district confirmed that tour groups did not cancel their hotel reservations this weekend, adding that it believed as long as the Malaysia government could contain its political situations; southern border provinces of Thailand should not be affected.
Tourism in Yala and Narathiwat provinces which border Malaysia also remained unaffected by the massive protests in Malaysia which started on Saturday.
Nevertheless, the actual number of Malaysian tourists who crossed the border on Sunday dropped slightly but it was mainly due to the fact that the weekend was ending. (TNA)
