Japan, 3 other nations to give up filing resolution for U.N. reform+

NEW YORK, July 9 Kyodo -
The group of four countries -- Japan, Germany, India and Brazil -- seeking permanent membership on the U.N. Security Council will likely give up filing a resolution to expand its permanent and nonpermanent memberships during the current session through September, according to G-4 diplomatic sources.
The G-4 has found it difficult to secure enough support for the proposal, the sources said. It needs to obtain more than 128 or two-thirds of all members to adopt the resolution at the U.N. General Assembly.
At a foreign ministerial meeting in New York in February, the G-4 decided to file a Security Council reform resolution during the current session by calling for minimum reforms, the sources said.
But given the campaigning against it, the countries have secured support from less than 90 countries so far.
