Woman, boy die in head-on Victorian smash
SYDNEY (AAP) - July 08 - A woman and a five-year-old boy are dead and four others are seriously injured after a head-on car crash in central Victoria.
Police believe it happened when a white Subaru, travelling with three children and two adults, partially crossed to the wrong side of the road, colliding with an oncoming red Holden Commodore.
The 48-year-old Kensington woman driving the Holden died at the scene.
A five-year-old boy travelling in the Subaru also died, despite efforts by paramedics to revive him.
The accident happened on the Goulburn Valley Highway at Molesworth at 1.20pm (AEST) on Friday.
Investigators were still on scene at 7pm and police said the highway between Yea and Cathkin would remain closed until 9pm.
A man in his 30s who suffered head and chest injuries is in a critical condition at the Royal Melbourne Hospital on Friday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Two six-year-old girls flown to the Royal Children's Hospital with abdominal injuries are in serious but stable conditions.
A woman aged in her 50s, initially trapped in the wreckage, was freed with pelvic and leg injuries and taken to The Alfred hospital.
