Thailand's Democrat Party seeks court's ruling to disband Puea Thai Party

BANGKOK, July 8 (TNA) - Thailand's outgoing Democrat Party of caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva Friday launched legal action against its arch rival Puea Thai Party, which won a landslide in the country's new general election last Sunday, seeking a judicial verdict to disband the Puea Thai Party, backed by exiled ex-Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra.
The Democrat Party filed the case with the Election Commission of Thailand or EC, asking the election agency to rule on the dissolution of the Puea Thai Party and to forward the case to the Constitutional Court for a final verdict, on grounds that some Puea Thai politicians banned from politics for five years from the Constitutional Court's previous verdicts were involved in the party's recent electoral campaigns.
However, the legal process is expected to take several months; so, it will not block Thaksin's youngest sister Yingluck Shinawatra, the Puea Thai Party's top list candidate, to soon become Thailand's first female prime minister. (TNA)
