World court to rule on Cambodia's Preah Vihear-related request July 18

BANGKOK, July 8 (TNA) - The World Court is scheduled to rule on a request by Cambodia for Thailand to immediately withdraw its troops from an unsettled area surrounding the ancient Preah Vihear Temple on July 18.

The Netherlands-based International Court of Justice (ICJ) has confirmed in its statement published on its website that it will decide on the Cambodian request on July 18.

Cambodia filed the case with the UN's highest court in late April this year, under which Phnom Penh also requested the ICJ for an interpretation of its verdict in 1962 regarding the unsettled area surrounding the 900-year-old Preah Vihear Temple.

Thailand earlier asked the case to be scrapped in its submission, but later said in June that the Kingdom would respect the World Court's ruling. Although Thailand has not disputed Cambodia's ownership of the 11th century Preah Vihear Temple secured by the ICJ's 1962 ruling, both Bangkok and Phnom Penh have claimed the ownership of the 4.6-square-kilometre area surrounding the ancient Hindu temple.
