TRCT ready to work with the new Thai government to restore peace

BANGKOK, July 7 (TNA) –The Truth for Reconciliation Commission of Thailand (TRCT), which investigated crackdowns on red shirt protesters last year, was ready to work with the new government under the leadership of the Pheu Thai Party to achieve reconciliation, said the chair of the panel Kanit Na Nakorn.

Kanit’s remark followed the announcement of Pheu Thai’s Yingluck Shinawatra, the prime minister-to-be, that she would promote national reconciliation and let the TRCT, which was set up by Abhisit Vejjajiva administration, continue with its work in fact-finding and giving recommendation for the propose of restoring peace in the country.

He said his commission would also continue maintaining its neutrality and independence.

The Chair of the TRCT dismissed media report that the new government would replace the Commission’s members with its own people, saying that new government would not do so; otherwise, it would have to justify the move to the public.

Kanit insisted that the report of the Commission investigation which it had submitted to the government was the same one that had been released to the public. He said the commission would also issue a half-year report on its work after its first anniversary on July 17. (TNA)
