Thai armed forces acquire new fleet of Gripen 39 C/D and Saab 340 aircraft

BANGKOK, July 7 (TNA) - The Royal Thai Armed Forces have officially acquired a new fleet of eight military aircraft from Swedish manufacturers to replace the ageing F5-B/E fleet.
Thai caretaker defence minister General Prawit Wongsuwan presided over an official ceremony, held at the Royal Thai Air Force's Wing 7 in Thailand's southern Surat Thani and attended by top brass military officers, Thursday to include the new fleet of six Gripen 39 C/D and two Saab 340 aircraft into the Royal Thai Armed Forces' hangars.
Earlier, the Thai Cabinet resolved in mid-Octoer 2007 to authorise the Royal Thai Air Force to acquire the new fleet of the sophisticated aircraft with spare parts, funded by a total state budget of some 19 billion baht, during the Thai government's 2008-2012 fiscal years to be used for the country's air defence purposes.
Sweden has also offered a post-graduate-level scholarship and bilateral air defence cooperation to Thailand as part of the Royal Thai Armed Forces' deal to acquire the new fleet of the military aircraft. (TNA)
