Young Thais to learn about the AEC

BANGKOK, July 7 (TNA) - Thai Ministry of Commerce’s Department of Trade Negotiations together with the Ministry of Education was preparing Thai students for the creation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), which would become effective in next four years.

Srirat Ratthapana, director-general of the Department of Trade Negotiations, and Jurairat Saengbunkham, deputy permanent secretary of the Education Ministry, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on education cooperation to prime teachers and students about the AEC, which was set to be created in 2015.

Srirat said teachers and students held a key role in transferring relevant knowledge to other target groups, noting that the collaboration would help the Department of Trade Negotiations in its public education effort to promote knowledge about trade liberalization in educational institutes, which was necessary during the ASEAN transition to the Economic Community.

Meanwhile, Jurairat said the Education Ministry would transfer some basic knowledge about Southeast Asia economy to educational institute’s executives so that they could pass them on to the students. Pilot projects would be launched in Chon Buri, Pathum Thani, Phitsanuloke, Ubon Ratchathani, Songkhla and Yala provinces. If it was proved to be successful, they would then be launched in other provinces, she said. (TNA)
