Qld lead NSW 24-10 at halftime in Origin
SYDNEY (AAP) - July 06 - Queensland produced close to the perfect 40 minutes of football before NSW staged a stunning late fightback to trail 24-10 at halftime in the State of Origin series decider at Suncorp Stadium.
The Maroons looked to have the game wrapped up when leading 24-0 with less than 10 minutes left, before Blues' fullback Anthony Minichiello and blockbusting winger Akuila Uate scored in the space of four minutes.
Uate's try down the right touchline in the final seconds gave NSW hope as they left the field 14 points down.
Before that, Greg Inglis, Sam Thaiday, Cameron Smith and winger Jharal Yow Yeh had the Blues shellshocked, trailing as delirious Maroons' fans prepared to party with retiring skipper Darren Lockyer playing his 36th and last Origin.
Lockyer brought the 52,000-strong crowd to their feet with a 40-metre bust that set up Smith's 31st-minute try a couple of rucks later, for an 18-0 lead.
Two minutes after that, Yow Yeh grabbed his second Origin try in three games, after Lockyer punched a hard grubber kick through which Minichiello couldn't control.
Inglis, a constant source of annoyance for Blues fans having been born in NSW, had opened the early onslaught in the 16th minute, chasing down a superb grubber off Johnathan Thurston's hot boot.
Such was Queensland's dominance, NSW barely ventured into the Maroons' half for the entire 40 minutes.
When they did, they came up with an amazingly freakish try to Minichiello after three Queensland players fumbled the ball in their own 30 metres.
They scored again through the excitingly-quick Uate to give themselves some hope in the second half.
