New bridges to ease Bangkok traffic

BANGKOK, July 6 (TNA) - Thailand is planning to construct 15 more fly-over bridges across Chao Phraya River, while improving existing ones to deal with expected growth in traffic and support railway expansion in Bangkok.
Supoj Saplorm, permanent secretary to the Thai Transport Ministry, said that the 15 planned-bridges would facilitate an expected daily traffic volume of some 22 million trips per day across the Chao Phraya section in the future, compared to the current volume of 17 million trips a day.
Sompoj also said that the new bridges were an essential transportation infrastructure to relieve traffic congestion, noting that an average traffic speed of a vehicle crossing the Chao Phraya River was about 10 kilometer an hour for inbound traffic and 30 kilometer an hour for outbound traffic. He added that the Ministry also planned to improve 22 existing bridges to support the road and railway network in urban area. (TNA)
