Suthep disagrees with Thaksin’s role as government trade envoy

BANGKOK, July 6 (TNA) - Thai caretaker prime minister Suthep Thaugsuban disagrees if the Pheu Thai Party will appoint Thaksin Shinawatra as a government trade envoy, saying that he is a fugitive.

Suthep, also Democrat Party secretary general, made the remarks Wednesday, insisting also that the move would tarnish the new government’s image.

Asked if Pheu Thai’s rise to power would improve bilateral relations between Thailand and Cambodia, Suthep said in short that it was not surprising as the two countries normally had a cordial relationship.

He refused however, to give further comment on Pheu Thai’s ministerial line-up following its victory in last Sunday’s general election, saying that he would wait until the official appointment had been made.

When asked how long he would let the new government work, Suthep said four years, which was the normal term of a government. He added that it was still undecided who would join the new Democrat-led opposition, but assured number was not a factor in carrying out checks-and-balances.

Meanwhile, in search for a new Democrat Party leader, Suthep insisted that Abhisit Vejjajiva was still the right person for the job though having resigned. (TNA)
