Abhisit warns Yingluck not to review Thaksin’s cases
BANGKOK, July 5 (TNA) - Outgoing Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has reminded the next government to work for the public interest, not for any individual, saying that if Pheu Thai Party focuses on amnesty for Thaksin Shinawatra, the Party’s reign will be short-lived.
Following his potential successor Yingluck Shinawatra’s announcement to promote reconciliation, Abhisit said the announced reconciliation had to aim at solving people’s difficulties and be free of any possible cause of unrest, stressing that reconciliation was not absolution and both should not be mixed with each other. He noted that reviewing the cases of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was inappropriate as it would ignite conflicts in the nation.
Nevertheless, Abhisit appreciated that Yingluck would allow the Truth and Reconciliation Committee which was chaired by Khanit Na Nakorn and set up by the Democrat-led government, to continue its work, which had made a certain extent of progress and received increasing public recognition.
Abhisit was also pleased with the quick formation of the new government by the Pheu Thai Party. He said the country should not cling to a caretaker government with its limited authority for too long. However, he reminded Yingluck that her government had duties to serve the general public, not her elder brother. (TNA)
