Thailand selected core co-ordinator for ASEAN strategies on tourism

BANGKOK, July 5 (TNA) - Thailand has been selected a core coordinator for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)'s tourism-related strategies.

Thai Deputy Permanent Secretary for Tourism and Sports Thanittha Sawetasila Maneechoti said on Tuesday that the decision was a resolution of the 34th ASEAN National Tourism Organizations Meetings, or the 34th ASEAN NTOs Meetings, held in Laos' Luang Phra Bang City late last month.

Under the resolution, Thailand has been assigned a core coordinator of task forces on ASEAN's strategies for the tourism market, eco-tourism personnel development, as well as green hotel and healthy spa standards.

At the regional gathering, Thanittha revealed, Thailand was also selected a member of the ASEAN task force on tourism marketing and communications, which is part of the 10-nation bloc's three-prong template on tourism strategic plan, comprising three relevant task forces. The other two task forces include those on qualitative tourism and on regional products development.

According to the senior official, Thailand also reported to the 34th ASEAN NTOs Meetings the appointment of the Green Leaf Foundation as an advisor to the development of the ASEAN Green Hotel Standard. Besides, Thailand will also organise a training programme on the ASEAN Green Hotel Standard, the first of its kind, in the country's eastern Chonburi Province from July 28-29--during which ASEAN member countries will be asked to endorse an ASEAN healthy spa draft plan to be presented before the next meeting of the ASEAN's qualitative tourism task force, scheduled to be held in Brunei Darussalam in October 2011, and before the next ASEAN senior tourism officials' meeting, set to be held in Indonesia' Manado City in January 2012.
