NSW skipper Gallen ready to be enemy No.1
Having produced one of the most memorable State of Origin performances to carry NSW to a series decider, NSW skipper Paul Gallen knows there will be a massive target on his back in the Suncorp Stadium finale.
"I think the press I've received over the past few weeks (means) I'm going to be," Gallen said of the prospect of him being a marked man in Wednesday night's Suncorp Stadium battle.
"That just goes with the way I play.
"It's not all about me. I've got 16 other team-mates who are going to be doing their best and doing their job as well and, if everyone does their job right, hopefully the result goes our way."
Gallen was a one-man wrecking crew in game two in Sydney, where he produced a powerhouse 80-minute performance in his first game at prop with his 211 running metres falling just two short of eclipsing the combined totals of Queensland's three front rowers.
While convinced he could better the effort on Wednesday night, the Blues' captain was confident he wouldn't have to do it again to get his side over the line.
"I wasn't planning to go for 80. It was only because we had a few injuries ... it forced me to play 80," Gallen said.
"But I don't think that's the plan for me to play 80. If I have to do it again, at least I know I can.
"There's no reason why I can't (go better in Brisbane).
"People talk about my game (in game two) and I've had a look at it - it was pretty simple game and didn't have to think a lot. I just had to run up and down the middle of the field - there's no reason why I can't do that again and improve on it."
Blues' coach Ricky Stuart said there was little doubt the Maroons would target Gallen, but had no concern over his ability to handle it.
"If he's not, I don't know my footy very well," Stuart said.
"I am not worrying about Paul Gallen's performance because I know it will be a good one.
"Paul Gallen's bad game is close to his good one.
"It's not Paul Gallen I am looking at. It's the performance level of players around him that needs to lift.
"It was a good performance in game two but we have to be a lot better than that if we think we're going to be in the fight."
Stuart's insistence the Blues would need to lift their effort from Sydney had little to do with him being disappointed with what they produced to square the series in game two, but rather a fear of a recharged Maroons side with revenge on their mind.
"We have to be better than game two. We have to have every individual a percentage or two better because otherwise we won't win the game," Stuart said.
"We haven't overlooked the capabilities of this (Maroons) team.
"They haven't fluked (five straight series). They're a great footy team and we need to do everything we possibly can to even think we're going to be in the game."
Stuart said he would not reveal his side until just before kick-off with the Blues intent on keeping the Maroons guessing as to the make-up of the final 17.
