Windy weather causes commuter chaos in NSW
SYDNEY (AAP) - Wild weather is causing commuter chaos in and around Sydney, with fallen trees blocking roads and train lines.
Motorists in the Illawarra and Southern Highlands were being urged to keep off the roads late on Tuesday.
"High winds (are) causing dangerous driving conditions," Transport NSW said in a statement.
The Illawarra Highway at Macquarie Pass is closed indefinitely, while the Hume Highway has one lane closed southbound at Yanderra.
Power failures have also caused traffic lights to black out at Mittagong and Nowra.
Trains heading out of the city on the north shore line were suspended from Gordon to Hornsby just before 5pm (AEST) on Tuesday.
Transport NSW said a fallen tree was blocking the line at Turramurra.
Earlier in the day, strong winds brought down a tree on the main railway line west of Sydney.
Train services were temporarily suspended between Springwood and Lithgow on the Blue Mountains line.
A severe weather warning remains in place for the city and other regions, with winds averaging 60km/h to 100km/h.
The State Emergency Service said there had been 400 calls for assistance for fallen trees in the Illawarra and on the south coast.
