High voter turnout seen across in Thailand

BANGKOK, July 4 (TNA) - The Election Commission of Thailand (EC) has reported an unexpected high voter turnout in Sunday’s general election.

At a press conference on Sunday night, Election Commissioners Prapun Naigowit, Sodsri Satayatum and Wisut Phothithan, confirmed that a total of 34,651,639 eligible voters took part in the election, with nationwide voter turnout standing at 74 per cent, close to the one in 2007.

In Bangkok, where more than 3 million out of over 4.2 million eligible voters visited 6,506 polling units across 33 constituencies, voter participation was reported at 71.62 per cent, compared to 69.37 per cent in 2007. The highest turnout rate in Bangkok was 77.21 per cent in Thawee Wattana district, while the lowest, at 63.73 per cent, in Dusit district. (TNA)
