NESDB optimistic over new Thai government

BANGKOK, July 4 (TNA) - The National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) says that the newly-elected government is believed to drive the Thai economy ahead with national reconciliation as promised.

When speaking of the optimism, NESDB Secretary General Akom Termpitayapaisit acknowledged that to what extent the majority-elected Pheu Thai Party's populist policies can generate more national income and domestic consumption will be assessed after the new administration officially announces its policy statement in the coming months, so will its policies' implications on the state budget framework in the 2012 fiscal year, under which a budget deficit was earlier capped to no higher than 300-500 billion baht.

Akom suggested that the newly-elected Pheu Thai government first spend the state budget on basic infrastructure development projects required by the 2007 Constitution and on policies promised to the Thai public during its recent electoral campaigns.

According to the NESDB chief, his government's think tank has, in the meantime, maintained its projection of Thailand's economic growth this year at 3.5-4.5 per cent. (TNA)
