Abhisit resigns as Democrat Party leader

BANGKOK, July 4 (TNA) - Thai caretaker Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has resigned as Democrat Party leader following a defeat by the opposition Pheu Thai Party in Sunday’s general election.

Abhisit announced the resignation Monday morning, saying he will take full responsibility as party leader now that the Democrat Party loss the majority of House seats.

According to the Election Commission of Thailand (EC), the Democrat Party secured 160 out of 500 House seats while the contending Pheu Thai won 264 seats, giving the latter the right to form a new government.

As results of the election continue to be broadcasted nationwide, Pheu Thai’s top list candidate Yingluck Shinawatra, the youngest sister of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, is soon expected to become Thailand’s first female prime minister.

Meanwhile, Banharn Silpa-archa, chief adviser to the Chartthaipattana Party, admitted has been invited to join the Pheu Thai-led coalition, along with Chart Pattana Puea Pandin and Phalang Chon parties. (TNA)
