Democrats concede defeat in Thailand’s July 3 election

BANGKOK, July 4 (TNA) - As Sunday’s election in Thailand indicated a major victory for the pro-Thaksin Pheu Thai party, the incumbent Prime Minister and Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva conceded defeat in the poll, saying his party is ready to work as an opposition in the new parliament.

In a press conference at the Democrat Party headquarters in Bangkok, Abhisit said he wishes to congratulate Yingluck Shinawatra, who is set to become the first female Prime Minister-elect of the Kingdom, and the Pheu Thai party on their victory.

He also hoped Yingluck the best of luck in reconciling the deeply polarised country and in solving the country’s economic problems, particularly the rise of food and consumer product prices.

Abhisit reflected that in the past two years his government had done its best to move the country forward amid various crises and noted the Democrats will now focus on becoming a dutiful opposition.

And in a veiled comment regarding Thaksin Shinawatra’s fate, the incumbent Prime Minister said that through the political mandate given to his party, the Democrats will work hard to maintain law and order in the Kingdom, and will not allow Pheu Thai superior numbers of MP elect in parliament to whitewash past crimes of a certain individual.

Regarding his future, Abhisit said he will reveal to the public what he will do next after the official results of the election are in. Some observers have speculated that Abhisit might resign from the position of the Democrats Party leader, or even retire from politics. (TNA)
