Thai voters’ turnout hits record high

BANGKOK, July 3 (TNA) - The Election Commission (EC) expresses its satisfaction as the July 3 election has gone smoothly and seen a historically high turnout.

Mr Wisut Phothithan, election commissioner for campaigns and participation, told a press conference that eligible voters actively exercised their right in the election and that many constituencies witnessed a high voting turnout. He believed this was a good sign for Thai politics.

He also said that the EC had received totally 274 complaints filed by members of non-governmental organizations that observed the election as well as 48,971 phone calls though its 1171 hotline service, most of which concerned enquiries for advance voting.

Meanwhile, Mr Somchai Juengprasert, election commissioner for investigation and analyses, said the investigation and analysis center of the EC received 185 complaints against election results and 1,929 complaints about violations to the election law, most of which concerns alleged vote-buying, alleged partiality by government officials and exchange of accusations.

The investigation center will gather evidence and report investigated cases to the EC so that the EC can rule on them before confirming the election outcome in the next 30 days.

Asked how many MP candidates were likely to be disqualified, Mr Somchai said the disqualification of 4-5 candidates might be proposed initially and more could be sought after the initial confirmation of the election outcome. However, the final decision on the disqualification would rest with the EC. He added that he could not reveal the constituencies where disqualification of an MP was likely because it could otherwise affect the formation of the next government. (TNA)
