Thai social networks active on Election Day

BANGKOK, July 3 (TNA) - Many well-known social networks of Thailand actively share information, warnings and updates about the country’s polls on the election date Sunday (July3).

The exchange of the information started when the polling began Sunday morning. The Thai News Agency did not spot any electoral wrongdoing online from 6pm Saturday until noon Sunday but found social networks shared useful information relating to the polling such as the locations of polling units, election-related precautions and traffic and weather reports.

Reporters use the net to deliver real-time developments on the election such as updates on well-known people casting their votes while people use social networks to exchange their views about the active atmosphere of the election and findings about irregularities at polling units such as the presence of drunks and the people who tore ballots.

Thai social network users said social networks served the needs of the workers who could not monitor developments on TV. They can receive updates via computers and mobile phones. However, they also doubt the reliability of online news reports that are very quick.

Above all, they viewed that social networks reduced the problems of distorted reports and that more people were watching TV news programs on the internet.

There are 10 million accounts of Thai people on the Facebook network and over 20 million Thai people have access to the net.

The Ratchadamnoen page of the pantip.com website suspended its reception of posts Saturday to prevent wrongdoing. The reception will resume after the election.

Major political parties also closed their websites to prevent violation to the election law which “prohibits anyone from campaigning for or against any candidate or political party by any means from 6pm on the eve of the election until the end of the election date.” (TNA)
