Kurdish MP: no fear for Kirkuk from the statements that indicated possibility of establishment of regions in Iraq

Baghdad (NINA) - MP from the Kurdish Alliance, Birzad Shaaban, said no fear for Kirkuk from the statements that indicated the possibility of the establishment of regions in Iraq because "the people of Kirkuk only decide the fate of the province, according to the constitutional mechanisms."

She told NINA today "we encourage establishment of regions on constitutional basis, there are constitutional mechanisms that do not allow the establishment of a region in Kirkuk, at the present time, unless normalization, census and referendum take place."

Shaaban said "only after these stages, the people of Kirkuk can decide their fate."

The statements made by Parliament Speaker, Osama Al Nujeifi, which hinted the possibility of forming a Sunni region, aroused the ire of many political blocs and figures.

Nujeifi denied that he had called for the establishment of a Sunni region and said he conveyed the concerns of some citizens of the western provinces of the continuing situation of marginalization and exclusion which they are exposed to by the central government, expressing fear that this situation could lead to forming a Sunni region.
