Thai health authority warns of hand, foot and mouth disease

BANGKOK, July 2 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Public Health's Department of Disease Control has warned the public to be alert for the hand, foot and mouth disease, following outbreaks in several areas in the country.
The department's Director-General, Dr. Manit Teeratantikanont, said that special attention should be paid to prevent or contain the disease among young children, mostly aged below five, at local nurseries, childcare centers and kindergartens across the country.
Dr. Manit reported, citing statistics provided by his ministry's Bureau of Epidemiology, that there were 2,868 case of hand, foot and mouth diseases detected in 76 provinces across Thailand from January 1-June 24 this year, most cases were detected at childcare centers and schools, particularly in Tak, Amnat Charoen, Si Sa Ket and Nakhon Pathom Provinces.
The senior Thai health official cautioned although there have been low fatalities so far, the hand, foot and mount disease can cause complications with other seriously-contracted diseases, including meningitis, paralysis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and acute myocarditis, suggesting caregivers and school teachers to exclude suspicious cases from their groups and take them to nearby hospitals; while infected cases are to stay home until they fully recover to prevent the spread of the communicable disease.
