Ballots cast overseas reach Thailand

BANGKOK, July 2 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that ballots cast by Thai voters at 91 Thai embassies and consulates-general in 66 foreign countries have already been shipped to Thailand, where the new general election will take place nationwide on Sunday.

The ministry's Deputy Director-General of the Department of Consular Affairs Mathurapojana Ittharong reported that overseas Thai voters' turnout stood unexpectedly higher by 26 per cent, compared with the country's previous overseas polling in 2007, with the highest turnout rate, this time, recorded in the United States.

Mathurapojana acknowledged that over 70,000, out of 150,000 people earlier registered for the overseas voting, showed up to exercise their right. She expressed her satisfaction with the turnout, saying it resulted from her ministry's successful public relations and cooperation from all concerned parties.

According to the senior Thai official, Thailand Post is now delivering the overseas cast ballots to their respective constituencies nationwide and the delivery is expected to be completed before the national poll kicks off Sunday.

Officials from the Department of Consular Affairs and those from the Election Commission of Thailand (EC) are supervising the transportation of the overseas cast ballots closely to ensure its transparency. (TNA)
