Thai political parties launch last-lap vote campaigns

BANGKOK, July 2 (TNA) - All political parties are launching their last-lap electoral campaigns to appeal for votes on Saturday, the eve of Thailand's new general election seen as crucial to the national future after years of political turmoil.
Two arch rival political parties, the ruling Democrat Party, led by Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, and the main opposition Pheu Thai Party aligned with exiled ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra, led by Thaksin's youngest sister Yingluck Shinawatra, are both wrapping up their vote campaigns in separate convoys, from early morning till no later than 6pm as allowed by the Thai electoral laws, through focal areas in Bangkok; while a large crowd of Thai voters who have not exercised their electoral votes in advance are returning to their hometowns to cast their ballots on Sunday.
Amid heavy downpours Friday evening, Abhisit led his Democrats in a rally for vote campaigning at the Royal Plaza in central Bangkok; while Yingluck led her Pheu Thai team to hold a vote campaign rally at Rajamangala National Stadium in Hua Mark area on the city.
Meanwhile, the Royal Thai Police has announced that up to some 170,000 police will be deployed at polling stations nationwide tomorrow to ensure order, as Thai voters will cast their ballots from 08am-03pm. (TNA)
