UN chief calls for peaceful Thailand's general election

BANGKOK, June 30 (TNA) - As all political parties are pushing forward to gain more votes in the last lap of their electoral campaigns for Thailand's upcoming general election on July 3, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called for a "fair, credible and transparent" national poll in the Kingdom.

The UN chief also urged in his statement released on Thursday that all Thai political parties "accept and respect the will of the Thai voters as expressed at the July 3 ballot boxes" and refrain from violence.

The Royal Thai Police has announced that more than 98,400 police officers will guard 90,854 polling booths nationwide on the July 3 general election.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission of Thailand (EC) said that it has now invited representatives from 10 countries to observe the country's new general election next Sunday, aimed at ensuring the international community that the Thai election meets international standards, noting that the 10 countries include Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, South Korea, Malaysia, Maldives, Nepal, Switzerland and Japan.
