A managing director of Kyodo's International Department Mr. Shigeyuki Yoshida has discussed recent developments in Japan's media world, notably those involving the newspaper industry. "In Japan, newspapers are the biggest clients for news agencies, but the industry is facing tougher difficulties than a year earlier owing to the fast progress of the information technology (IT) revolution, and needless to say, on top of that, the disaster created very negative impacts on the industry, one of which is Japan's economic slowdown. Newspapers have suffered drastic declines in advertising revenue which is one of the two key pillars of their revenue sources. According to the data from the Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association, advertising revenue declined by 12% in 2009. Last year, the decrease continued but the situation eased. Ad income has been nearly halved over the last 10 years. Experts say the fall in newspaper publishers' ad income is a structural phenomenon and it is unlikely to go back up again even when the economy recovers in the future," he said.
Since its founding in 1945, Kyodo News has continued news reporting activities with an aspiration to contribute to global peace through the promotion of mutual understanding among the peoples of the world.

The Yonhap agency of the Republic of Korea has spoken about its successful advancement into broadcast media and our preparations so far in launching an all-news cable TV channel. The Yonhap has been preparing to advance into the TV sector following the South Korean government's revision of its media law that now allows news agencies to become broadcasters. At the end of last year, a Yonhap-led consortium was the sole winner of a government-issued license granting the right to launch an all-news cable TV channel. "We surpassed other contenders with our strenuous and intensive preparations such as the formation of a competitive Yonhap News TV Consortium and writing up a business plan, which took nearly one and a half years," they said.
Media companies in South Korea and all over the world face rapid changes in both hardware and software. The hardware change is characterized as the so-called "N-Screen" triggered by technical trends such as the conversion of broadcasting and communication and the development of the Internet. The software change, on the other hand, refers to the cross-media caused by cutthroat competition among a variety of media outlets.
"With the opportunity presented by the Yonhap News TV launch, Yonhap News Agency has set strategic core goals and is focusing on achieving them. Internally, we hope to provide a public media service by delivering fast, accurate, fair and in-depth coverage as a news agency integrated into the backbone of society. Externally, we hope to represent Asia as a global news agency protecting information sovereignty and delivering an accurate image of South Korea to people all over the world. Finally, we aim to position Yonhap as a media group leading fellow news outlets through the development of multimedia content in response to the many challenges facing us in the new media era," the Yonhap report said.
After these reports, the representatives of the Bernama of Malaysia, IRNA, MNA (both Iran) and TNA (Thailand) have sounded their reports talking about their positions, goals and future works.
