Thai PM: Border issues will not derail election

BANGKOK, June 29 (TNA) - Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva affirmed on Wednesday that unsettled Thai-Cambodian border issues are not a factor to derail Thailand's upcoming general election, set on July 3.

Abhisit, who is the leader of the ruling Democrat Party, said while campaigning for votes in Bangkok's suburban Samut Sakhon Province that he is not worried over the Thai-Cambodian border situation, as he believes that the Thai military is ready to protect the national sovereignty.

In response to Cambodian Premier Hun Sen's recent comments that Thailand could launch an attack across the border into Cambodia and would then use the border rows as a reason to cancel Thailand's July 3 national poll, Abhisit insisted that there is no reason for Thai soldiers to clash with Cambodian troops first, and that the forthcoming general election will definitely be carried on, not cancelled.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant General Udomdej Sitabutr, Commanding General of Thailand's First Army Area Command confirmed that the Thai military will remain neutral and fully support the July 3 general election; while Lieutenant General Thawatchai Samutsakhon, Commanding General of the Second Army Area Command in charge of overseeing security in the Thai Northeast, acknowledged that there have been no border troop reinforcements in the Thai side, but only a routine rotation of his army units.
