Thailand introduces plans to achieve renewable electricity generation target

BANGKOK, June 29 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Energy announced on Tuesday that Thailand will be implementing new plans, including the installation of solar panels on residential buildings, in a bid to achieve its target on more renewable energy consumption by 2022.

Thai Deputy Permanent Secretary for Energy Kurujit Nakornthap said after opening a seminar on "Clean Power Asia" in Bangkok that Thailand has targeted to increase the proportion of renewable energy consumption to 20 per cent, or one-fifth, of the country's total energy use by 2022.

Kurujit noted that use of renewable energy made up about 6.4 per cent of Thailand's overall energy consumption in 2008 and increased to 11 per cent in 2010, and that Thailand has targeted to further raise its renewable energy consumption to 15 per cent this year.

Kurujit said with its 15-year alternative energy promotion and its 20 year-energy conservation plans, Thailand is now a driving force to become a clean energy leader in the region, urging the new Thai government to continue supporting the use of alternative energy including wind, solar and biomass to generate electricity in the future.

Meanwhile, over 300 energy-related operators from several countries, including Indonesia and Malaysia, the two largest fossil exporting countries in the region -- participated in the seminar, aimed at tackling global warming through clean energy solutions. (TNA)
