No renewed crossfire anticipated along Thai-Cambodian border
BANGKOK, June 29 (TNA) - Thai caretaker defence minister General Prawit Wongsuwan said on Tuesday that it was unlikely to have renewed skirmishes between Thai and Cambodian troops along the common border, after Thailand's decision on withdrawing from the World Heritage Committee under the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
General Prawit noted that Thai and Cambodian soldiers have apparently preferred to have border issues between the two neighbouring countries settled through talks, rather than violence. The Thai defence minister affirmed, however, that the Thai military has been well-prepared to defend the national sovereignty with stepped-up vigilance and security measures having been in good place.
Meanwhile, Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva insisted that Thailand's withdrawal from the World Heritage Convention would have no impacts on the nation, including World Heritage sites in Thailand as they have been well-maintained.
Abhisit acknowledged, however, that he has ordered the Thai military to strictly guard Thai areas along the Thai-Cambodian border, and that Thai caretaker natural resources and environment minister Suwit Khunkitti was set to report the Thai move to the Cabinet at its weekly meeting in Bangkok on Tuesday before parties concerned would then consider subsequent actions.
