Thailand keeps close eyes on Thai-Cambodia border trade
BANGKOK, June 29 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Commerce has kept its close eyes on Thai-Cambodian border trade, following Thailand’s withdrawal its membership from the World Heritage Committee under the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Thai caretaker commerce minister Pornthiva Nakasai reported to the Cabinet at its weekly meeting on Tuesday on possible impacts on the border trade if there was any renewed clash along Thai-Cambodia border--although a disputed border area surrounding the Preah Vihear Temple where crossfire often took place is a non-commercial area. Pornthiva also proposed to the Thai Cabinet a back-up plan in case checkpoints along the Thai-Cambodian border were forced to close down.
The Thai minister said that she has also ordered the Thai commercial attaché to Cambodia to closely monitor the border situation although there have been no reports on any clash along Thai-Cambodia border so far, and that bilateral economic relations between the two neighbouring countries have remained unaffected.
According to the Thai minister, two-way trade along the Thai-Cambodian border has not as active as that reported along the Thai-Malaysian border. (TNA)
