Thailand to rev up tapioca exports by 15% this year

BANGKOK, June 29 (TNA) - Thailand plans to boost exports of tapioca and its by-products up by some 15 per cent this year, in a bid to underline its position as a world top exporter of high quality tapioca and related products.

Thai Permanent Secretary for Commerce Yanyong Puangraj made the announcement on Tuesday when opening the World Tapioca Conference 2011, held at the IMPACT Trade and Exhibition Convention Center in Muang Thong Thani on the outskirts of Bangkok from June 28-30 and attended by about 1,200 trade representatives and experts in the tapioca industry from over 20 countries worldwide.

Yanyong revealed that Thailand is capable of producing a total of some 30 million tons of tapioca on average annually and expects to export some 7.2-7.3 tons of tapioca related products to overseas markets worldwide, worth at least 70 billion baht, this year when his ministry has targeted to boost Thailand's total export of tapioca and other by-products up by 15 per cent to over 100 importing economies.

In 2010, Yanyong said, Thailand recorded some 7.27 million tons of tapioca-based exports, worth some 2.1 billion U.S. dollars or about 68.33 billion baht in total.

Meanwhile, participants at this week’s world tapioca conference will share experiences and views on the global tapioca industry, including ways to expand and promote related market opportunities, while seeking to prepare measures to cope with possible world food and energy crises in the future.
